Makani’s structures team has assembled a workshop with a balance of modern computer controlled tools and proven legacy technologies. The Structures Team uses a combination of CAD, CAM, FEM and traditional hand calculations to design and fabricate precision prototypes.

Makani designs and builds high-precision parts for every aspect of the wing. Lightweight, hybrid construction of balsa wood and carbon fiber enables Makani to rapidly build and test aerodynamic configurations. Pictured is a mold for the wing-mounted rotor.

Makani has constructed a high-voltage mobile power station that allows us to test in a variety of wind and topographical conditions while sustaining the high loads produced by the wing during flight. The battery box features multiple rows of batteries connected to charging and bypass networks. Electrical safety circuits and halon fire protection systems are integrated to work automatically.
