Makani Power is proud to announce that we are the recipient of Popular Mechanic’s 2011 Breakthrough Innovator Award in the Energy Category, an honor that will culminate with a reception at the Hearst Tower in New York City on Monday, October 10. Other recipients include: Aerovironment and DARPA for a robotic hummingbird, and Elon Musk and SpaceX for the Dragon spacecraft; the Mars Rover also received a Lifetime Achievement award. The Breakthrough Awards recognize the innovators and products that dramatically advanced the fields of technology, medicine, space exploration, automotive design, environmental engineering, and more. See all eleven innovator honorees here, and all ten product winners here.
We would like to correct a misstatement of our goals from the article, however. While the jet stream is an attractive source of energy, Makani’s technology is designed to operate most efficiently at middle altitudes between 1000 and 2000 feet.
Below are a few behind-the-scenes images of the photo shoot. The photographer, Phil Toledano, was hilarious, irreverent and awesome. Check out his site for a peek into the mind of a megalomaniac.
